Prop Firm FAQs

Everything you need to know about prop firm evaluations, payouts, rules, and choosing the right firm for your trading style.

What is a trailing drawdown?

A trailing drawdown is a limit on how much your account equity or balance can drop from its highest point. Unlike a static drawdown, it ‘trails’ your profits, meaning as you make money, the limit moves up with your watermark until it locks at your starting balance.

How do I get my first payout?

Once you pass the evaluation and trade on a funded account, you can request your first payout after the minimum trading days and payout cycle defined by the prop firm (typically 14 or 30 days). You must also be in profit and not have breached any drawdown rules.

Are prop firms regulated?

Most prop firms themselves are not heavily regulated like traditional retail brokers because they provide you with their own corporate capital rather than holding client deposits. However, the brokers they partner with for execution are often regulated.

Do I have to use an evaluation account?

Usually yes, but some firms offer ‘Instant Funding’ accounts where you bypass the evaluation phase for a higher upfront fee, though the profit split or trade conditions might be stricter.

What is a daily drawdown limit?

A daily drawdown limit is the maximum amount (usually 4–5%) your account equity or balance is allowed to drop in a single trading day. Once breached, your account is typically paused or terminated immediately.
